Exmouth Town manager Andy Rawlings is delighted to have got Martin Rice signed and the former Exeter City and Torquay United glovesman is set to make his debut for the club in Saturday’s Southern Road meeting with Bodmin Town.

Rawlings says of the Rice signing: “It’s very much down to Kev [Kevin Miller], as he managed to get hold of Martin’s phone number when he left Tivvy Town and, realising that he was not with a club, I felt it was a move we had to try to get over the line and we have done just that.”

So what does the Town boss think Rice will bring to the team. Rawlings replied, saying: “Martin will bring an abundance of experience and will certainly be a ‘voice’ in our defence and that is something we have been lacking for some time.”

He has bags of experience and is also a really big character in the dressing room and I am hoping he will prove to be the person who glues it all together in terms of our defensive work.”

The Town boss continued: “We are predominantly a young side so any experience that we can get in will be invaluable and Martin ticks all those particular boxes.”

Town are also able to welcome back Sam Cooper for the Bodmin game and with Ben Steer – who scored the Town goal in the 1-1 draw they got on a visit to Bodmin earlier in the season – having recovered from a shoulder injury, the Town selection options suddenly look much better for Rawlings.

Also back in harness are strike duo Ace High and Brandon Green, both of whom have had a long wait to get back to playing after they had served suspensions and neither have played since early December!

Rawlings says: “We are certainly going into the Bodmin game with arguably our strongest available side and possibly our strongest side this season so far.”

As for what sort of game the Town boss expects, he says: “They [Bodmin] are a class side and will be as keen as we are to finally get back to playing on a regular basis. This game is another of those where I suspect many of those pitching up at Southern Road will do so expecting to us get turned over. However, I am most certainly not in that camp and I really do expect us to give them a really good run for their money. What I do hope for is that the excellent support that I have seen at Southern Road already this season turns out in force once again to give us a real lift.”

Kick-off at Southern Road on Saturday is 3pm.
