At the recent Exmouth versus Maidenhead meeting, the Imperial Ground home of the Cockles was also the scene of a very special shirt presentation.

The South West Premier Division meeting with Maidenhead also saw a gathering of past Cockles captains and, during their pre-match luncheon, club president David Bassett and chairman Ian Harris were presented with a signed England shirt from Joe Launchbury, who these days, of course, plays for Wasps and England.

Joe played for Exmouth RFC as a junior in the Under-7s, 8s and 9s from 1988 through to 2000 before his family moved away from the area.

He has since played for England at both Under-18 and Under-20 levels before making his debut for England in 2012.

The shirt was presented to the club by his parents, Steve and Sarah Launchbury, and the display was co-ordinated and sponsored by Jon and Sue Stone.

One lovely touch to report, Joe signed the shirt ‘My first club!”, and the framed shirt now hangs resplendent in the Cockles’ clubhouse for all current junior members of the club to perhaps aspire to.
