Exmouth Rugby Club have named former Launceston player-coach and Barnstaple head coach Steve Perry as their new head coach.

The former Launceston player-coach and Barnstaple head coach will bring a fresh set of skills and ideas to the Imperial Recreation Ground.

Exmouth chairman Ian Harris says: “We are delighted to welcome Steve to the Imperial Ground. With our current playing staff, a mix of experience and young talent coming through the ranks, Steve is the perfect fit for a club that is keen to develop and progress, he also comes with great recommendation.”

Of his appointment, Steve Perry says: “‘I’m looking forward to the new challenge of developing relationships and player ability.

“It will also be great to have my family close by supporting me and making this our club. I thank Ian, JJ and Nick for this opportunity and hope I can repay their trust.’

John ‘JJ’ Justice, one of the two new Exmouth RFC director of rugby, and who is now responsible for player pathway, having previously been the club’s colts coach, says: “A very warm welcome to the club Pez [Steve Perry]. Personally, I am very excited about the coming season, its challenges, to be involved with Nick at the spearhead of the new rugby structure and to further build on the foundation laid by others over recent years. Having spent the last 12 years within the junior and colts set up I am very excited about completing the pathway cycle, integrating them with some very exciting existing home grown talent and ensuring this continues throughout the club.

“I believe we have a fine pool of players across the board and it will be our job to make sure all these guys develop as players and personalities as well as a team by carrying on the one club ethos and ensuring they enjoy their rugby at the Imperial Ground. Exciting times indeed!”

Nick Smith, who is the other new director or rugby and will oversee operations at the club, having moved across from the 1st XV manager’s role, says: “Steve has really impressed us with his strong focus on player skills and JJ and myself believe this is an area he can really drive forward at Exmouth. We have a very talented squad of players and fantastic support staff at Exmouth. There is already a buzz around the club about next season and what this group of players can achieve.”
