Archant

Exmouth slipped closer to a swift return to the National Three (SW) division after suffering their 18th defeat in 21 National Two (S) outings, writes Steve Birley.

However, once again it was very much a case of small margins as the Cockles were well in the contest until a late blast by the Somerset side who struck with two tries inside the last dozen minutes.

It seems that confirmation of the Cockles relegation could be confirmed as soon as this coming weekend for they head into Saturday’s game at third in the table Ampthill sitting 28 points from safety with just 35 left to play for!

For the umpteenth time this season the Cockles were always ‘in the game’ and, with the scores level on the hour mark, hope sprang eternal that this would not become their ninth successive league defeat.

After falling behind to an early penalty the Cockles edged in front courtesy of a Richard Cadywould try and a Rob Avery-Wright conversion.

It stayed that way until just before the break when, against the run of play, the visitor’s took the lead with a converted try.

It was no more than the Cockles deserved when, ten minutes into the second half, the Cockles regained the lead with a Dave Bargent try and another Avery-Wright conversion.

A converted try for Taunton saw them back in front, but an Avery-Wright penalty tied things up at 17-all with 20 minutes to play.

Avery Wright slotted a 66th minute penalty to bring the home side to within four points of the Titans.

Both sides then created late chances to settle the outcome and, unfortunately for another good Imperial Ground turnout, it was the visiting faithful cheering as their team scored twice late on to give the Cockles an almighty push towards the dreaded drop!
