Exmouth did something no other National Three (SW) league side has managed in the 2012/13 season on the final Saturday of November.

The Cockles became the first team to deny all-conquering London Irish Amateurs a league success when they drew 13-13 with the Wild Geese on their own patch in South West London.

It was always going to take a titanic effort from the Cockles and that is just what the team delivered. The home team won the try count two to on, but the Cockles, thanks to the trusty boot of Andrew Powell, who converted the penalty try awarded to his side and also slotted a brace of penalties, ensured that the team returned to Exmouth with a share of the spoils.

On the long journey home Cockles director of rugby Chris Wright said: “I feel we should have won it and for me it’s certainly a case of two points dropped! They (London Irish) are very sharp in the backs department, but our forwards dominated proceedings. In the second half the home side were rarely, if ever, in our 22. Whilst at the other end, our forwards were constantly looking to put their defence on the back foot. A lesser side than a very good London Irish team would quite likely have shipped a penalty during our second half dominance that would have no doubt given us the opportunity to win the match. However, as I say they are a formidable side and we can reflect on a job very well done, even if it is one tinged with what might have been!”
