Exeter Chiefs land historic cup triumph
11:45 20 March 2014
Exeter Chiefs celebrated with supporters after their historic victory over Northampton Saints in the LV=Cup, writes Steve Birley.
The Sunday fixture was played before a full house at Sandy Park and followed on television by people across the world.
It’s the first piece of major silverware that the Chiefs have won and they won it with tries from Chris Whitehead and Dean Mumm together with a conversion and a penalty from young fly-half Harry Slade.
Prior to the game Chiefs boss Rob Baxter had been forced to tweak the line-up that had claimed a first win at Bath in 26 years the week before with Ben Moon returned to the front-row, Jason Shoemark at centre and Tongan speedster Fetu’u Vainkolo on the left wing.
Chiefs led 8-3 at half-time and stayed in front throughout to richly deserve their 15-8 triumph.
Post match there were scenes at Sandy Park reminiscent of those that were seen just four years ago when Exeter Chiefs reached the promised land of the Premiership up at Bristol.
