Exmouth Under-12s travelled to South Molton for a first meeting with the Mid Devon club and journeyed with a depleted side, missing eight regular players.
Playing into the strong wind in the first half Exmouth took the game to the hosts and were camped in the home sides half for the first quarter but with nothing to show for their efforts when a good clearance kick took the play back to within five-metres from the Exmouth line. The powerful South Molton forwards forced their way over to open the score which was then converted.
From the restart Exmouth soon found themselves defending again and a scrum was awarded to Exmouth deep in the their own territory. The forwards secured the ball for Scrum half Josh Cressall who delivered the ball swiftly and accurately to the back line and Ben Dawson broke through the home defence and with an open field in front of him and only a full back to beat there was never any doubt about the outcome and Exmouth levelled the score.
During a fiercely fought first half South Molton crossed to score two more tries converting one and after a slick piece of running from rapidly improving newcomer Luka Smith a determined effort from the Exmouth forwards Enabled Jarrod Palmer to score his first try for the Cockles.
Although the second half continued as a evenly matched contest the home side made the most of their big forwards to break through and score four tries answered only by one from Exmouth’s Harry Sprague. This was a most enjoyable game for the supporters of both sides and the Exmouth contingent were encouraged by the way the young Cockles brought recent training skills to their game.
Man of the Match award went to Ben Dawson who was a constant thorn in the home sides defence and it was encouraging to see Corbin Gilman have a good game in his first competitive rugby match.
