Exmouth fell to defeat for the 13th time in 17 National Two (S) outings when defeated in front of the Imperial Ground faithful by a side that had started the game in the bottom three.

It was typical of the way things have gone for the Cockles this term that the visitors were able to depart with the bonus point.

Director of rugby Chris Wright said: “It was all so typical of the way things have fallen against us in many games this season. We were on our second penalty advantage in their 22 when we were held up in goal and thought we would be brought back for the penalty. Instead the referee gave us a five-metre scrum which would have been fine at any other time in the contest, but not when we were on two lots of penalty advantage!”

Wright continued: “There was certainly a case for Dings to have had a player yellow carded during a period when we were piling it on and they gave away lots of penalties.”

The visitors struck first, opening the scoring in the eighth minute with a try in the corner. A penalty followed before another converted try put Dings in the box seat.

The home faithful were given hope during the half-time interval thanks to a penalty try awarded when a maul was hauled down crossing the visitor’s line and Richard Cadywould tucked away the conversion. Shortly after the restart Cadywould and Alex Brown combined to play in Richard Bright, but a penalty and a late try sealed the Cockles’ fate.

Exmouth team: Brown, Bright, Wathes, Hill, Hooper, Cadywould, Bolt, Chapman, Emery, Pullinger-Ham, Bentley, Lowe, Harris, Bargent, Morshead. Replacements: Watson-Brooks, Savage, Lowry, Pyne, Avery-Wright.
