Buckley brace in Topsham home defeat to Plymouth Albion Oaks
08:48 19 September 2012
Topsham 12, Plymstock Albion Oaks 25
Topsham were well beaten by the visiting side despite the surprise inclusion in their ranks of an Exeter Chiefs’ coach.
Ricky Pellow is a coach at Sandy Park with the Chiefs, but has been training with the Tops and looking to play when his Premiership club commitments permit.
It did not take long for the class to shine through as Pellow, who has also turned out for Bath, Worcester and Exeter, amongst others in his rugby career, was instrumental in the opening try as he played in winger Adam Buckley to put the opening points on the board.
The visitors responded well and took the lead with a converted try.
Topsham were quickly back onto the front foot and were fully deserving of the lead once more and again it was the fleet-footed Buckley who went over followed by Tom Viljeon tucking away the conversion.
The Plymouth side went into the break courtesy of a penalty and that score was repeated in the early exchanges of the second half to extend the visitors lead.
Oaks then stepped up the pace and ran in a couple of tries to extend their advantage.
To their credit Topsham continued to press and had the greater share of both ball and territorial advantage over the final third of the contest.
They spent much of the final ten minute camped on the visitors line in desperate search of a score which would have at least seem them bank the bonus point, albeit in defeat.
Sadly it was not to be and they had to troop off beaten at the final whistle.
