Archant

Withycombe Under-7s faced a large and well drilled Newton Abbot side for their first encounters of the season, and they were not to be overawed or intimidated.

With the sun out hopes were high amongst players and supporters alike.

Game one saw both sides put out very strong sides in an attempt to set the tone, and it was the young Withies who got off to the better start and Thomas Lawrence scoring the first try of the year. Newton Abbot fought back strongly and tries were exchanged to turnaround at 3-3.

In the second period Withy started to get on top through some brilliant tagging, including a full length dive from Kieran Long to deny a certain score.

Again tries ebbed and flowed with Otto Montgomery-Ames, and Jack Macdonald-Brown adding to the score.

As the clock ran down it was left to some swift running and fine support play to produce the match winning score as Kieran Long went over in the corner to the delight of the home support.

In all the other games on the day the young Withies gave very good accounts of themselves.

Abigail Cook impressed with some very direct running that left the Newton Abbot defence flat footed as she scored at will.

Those who are very new to the squad performed well and look in good shape for the rest of the season.

Tagging will be key this season and this has been worked on and the results are starting to show.

The coaches were left very pleased with this first showing and know that there is a lot more to come.

All games played between the two sides were played in a tremendous spirit, and much to the credit of all Withycombe players a total of 9 try scorers were registered. The signs are very good for the year to come.

Man of the Match was Abigail Cook with an impressive 10 tries to her name, and special mention goes to Otto Montgomery-Ames, Max Rowley, Abigail Cotter and Charlie Tucker for all scoring tries in their debut games.
