Sixty-eight seniors played in the Ron Jefford Medal competition at East Devon on Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

Most of the senior competitions are played in the stableford format where, if you make a complete Ovaltine (Horlicks is old hat!) of a hole then you can go onto the next without too much of a stain in your character/score card. However, the medal round is much harder – every shot counts whether you have to hit from inside a bush or take five to get out of a bunker.

The conditions were perfect; hardly a breath of wind - only the occasional zephyr - though the occasional puff (point nought one on the Beaufort scale!) did make an appearance later in the round.

Now Ron Jefford is a nice chap, a vet like the rest of us so what possessed him to choose the harder medal format rather than stableford? He’s obviously a tough chap for whom bunkers hold no fear but that might explain the lower turnout of only 68 players!

Never mind; he set the challenge and it was up to us to meet it and the player who did was Brian Welch with an excellent net score of 67 from a handicap of 15, now 13. Well done, Brian. BW has had his name in the top section of many competitions in the past few months so his win on Monday is well deserved.

The other leading scores were: 2, Brian Leveridge, net 70 (21); 3, Mike Trapnell, net 71 (12); 4, Eric James, net 72 (15); 5, Mike Brailey, net 72 (9); 6, Graham Webb, net 72 (16); 7, Robert Harland, net 72 (17); 8, Charlie Kerslake, net 72 (11).

There were 11 twos sharing prizes you can only dream of – if someone will tell me the twos pot, I will tell you who has entered the 100 rich list!
