Roberts makes it a magnificent seven finals at Madeira

Jan Roberts has certainly been in fine form over the past week, writes Catherine King.
In the Bob Burch singles semi-final Jan Roberts she edged out Liz Smerdon in a classic encounter that went the distance before Jan took the honours had an exciting match that with the very last wood.
She then teamed up with Graham Clarkson in the semi-final of the Bob Caddy 2 wood singles and, after another close game, they booked a final berth.
This, I believe, means Jan is now involved in a magnificent seven different finals – is this a record? I am sure someone will know!
There was yet more success for Jan as she teamed up with Christine Macaulay, Liz Smerdon and Catherine King to reach the final of the County fours after a 22-18 victory against Pam Lee, Jean Ward, Aileen Hodsoll and Val Lander from Plymouth life centre
The meeting of the men’s captain’s team and the ladies’ captain’s team ended in a 62-53 triumph for the fairer sex! The ladies’ won on two rinks and lost on one. The victorious rinks were J Grundy, J Turner, L Halpin and A Flockhart (18-15) and J Worsfold, M Furminger, A Doidge and V Allam (27-16), whilst S Lampey, M Killoran, M Dyson and T Wildon went down 22-17.
The Lane Trophy match against Kingsley was a close encounter, but ended up in a three shot defeat for Madeira. In the home leg there was a 20-11 win for J Glaister, P Wilkins, A Doidge and M Powell, whilst F Relph, P Preece, M Humphrey and T Wildon were edged out 18-17.
In the away leg there was a one-shot loss for J Grundy, F Hughes, C Worth and N Fiddimore whilst J Bagnall, J Gosling, L Halpin and M Dyson lost 25-15.
A meeting with Sidmouth ended in a 62-54 Madeira success. D Norman, M Cooper, A Doidge and V Bevan were 25-19 victors and G Grundy, D Lowe, V Allam and J Rainton were 20-12 victors. The rink of F Relph, M Killoran, C Worth and T Wildon were beaten 23-17.
The local derby with Budleigh Salterton produced an eight shot Madeira win. C Macaulay, P Preece, L Halpin and J Smith were 19-12 winners and the rink of J Turner, M Humphrey, M Dyson and T Wildon won 22-15. Then only rink to lose was the one of F Hughes, P Wilkins, A Doidge and A Flockhart who lost 19-13.
