The national point-to-point season reaches its conclusion at Umberleigh on Saturday and the usual party atmosphere is sure to pervade with the sport’s champions crowned after the meeting.
Richard Burton, on 37 winners, has three in hand from Phil York with Cornwall’s Will Biddick assured of third place ahead of Richard Woollacott on 29 winners.
However, Woollacott will retain his area title as he has ridden more winners in the Devon and Cornwall area and Jo Buck will win her first ever ladies’ title in the area.
But the area and national title for the leading novice male will go right to the wire with Okehampton’s Michael Heard chasing Irishman Micheal Nolan. Heard is three winners behind and could have at least two rides on Saturday with the area’s leading veteran Paddy The Piper and the leading novice/mare Roll On Rose both entered.
Roll On Rose scored her fifth win of the season at wet Bratton Down on Sunday and she’s entered in the confined and men’s open races alongside her stable mate Paddy The Piper.
Also in the men’s open is the prolific mare Lady Myfanwy and Chandlers Cross who could help Burton secure the national men’s title.
Entries in the restricted include the promising six year old Arniecoco who has won and finished second on his two starts this season.
Lady Myfanwy is also entered in the ladies’ race alongside Doof who won a ladies’ open at Upcott Cross in good style in May adding to his wins at Staffords Cross and Terborugh Hill.
Present of Flame could provide Philip York with another winner in the restricted. Their opposition may include the eight year old Anynearexit, a winner at Chaddesley Corbett in May, and Gemini Ahhs, who started favorutie at the same meeting on the back of two wins, but finished just a length and three quarters in third.
Racing kicks off at 2pm and takes place near Torrington and typically attracted enthusiasts from far and wide who travel to the finale for the racing and party atmosphere. There will also be plenty of stalls, a licensed bar and bookies on site. The meeting will also feature the Devon and Cornwall area pony racing finals.
The course is situated at Chapleton Barton on the A377 five miles south east of Barnstaple, postcode EX37 9EB.
