The first leg of The Picture Match took place at East Devon last Sunday 11 May, writes Paul Willoughby.

This is a twice yearly fixture between East Devon and Sidmouth golf club dating back to 1932 and the trophy is The Picture – a framed cartoon drawn by a Sidmouth member over 80 years ago when his club issued the challenge (and lost!). The Picture remains in the clubhouse of the winning team so having won last September’s second leg, East Devon retain it.

The match is an all day event with foursomes in the morning (Non Golfers, this means the players play as a pair and take alternate strokes – so why is it called ‘foursomes’?; should be ‘twosomes’!) and singles in the afternoon. 2014 is Sidmouth’s 125th anniversary and they fielded a strong team. Both however had to put up with strong gusty winds in the morning with occasional showers though conditions improved in the afternoon.

The Foursomes got off to a good start with East Devon’s top pair, James Thomas and Tom Partridge winning handsomely. However Sidmouth fought back and the score at the end of the morning was 4 – 4, so all to play for in the afternoon.

East Devon rose to the challenge under the leadership of club vice-captain, Stewart Jackson and won the singles by a hefty margin of 13.5 to 2.5. It was a good, friendly day (as it always is) and East Devon now take a good score of 17.5 to the return leg at Sidmouth on September 14.
