Phear Park tea powers team to Paignton win

This past weekend proved to both busy and successful for Phear Park as back-to-back wins were recorded for the first time this season, writes Lawrie Harries.

On Saturday Park played host to Exeter St Thomas in a four triples’ friendly that turned out to be a very close encounter indeed!

The rinks were shared at two apiece, but Park emerged winners by just one shot.

David Horne’s triple of Peter Burch and Faye Downend went into tea leading by 15 shots. After tea they were struck by Phear Park’s season long problem of capitalising on strong positions and they only scored two more shots during the afternoon!

However, this did prove to be just enough to win by 20 shots to 18.

No such problems for the triple of Tim Flather, Ron Rooke and John Robins who only lost one end after tea and ended 24-8 ahead.

On Sunday Park welcomed Paignton for a five rink friendly and invited former members Joan and David Evans to join them for the afternoon.

They were so keen to play for the mother-club again that they travelled down to Paignton to make sure Paignton members were on their way to Exmouth. The other version of this incident is that they got the venue wrong!

Park won three of the five rinks and by 12 shots overall. An interesting battle took place on Dave Martin’s rink who skipped Brian Halsey, Tim Flather and Margo Allen.

At half way the scores were level at 10-all. After tea the home rink came out seemingly rejuvenated and raring to go. So much so that they only lost one end and finished 30-12 ahead.

Understandably, the visiting rink asked for the tea to be analysed, but by this time the evidence – if any – was in the murky depths of South West Water’s sewers.

There was a good win for Bob Smith’s rink of Joan Evans, David Dowden and Lawrie Harries who won the last four ends to overcome a deficit to win 19-16.

Park’s third victorious rink was Billy Hanley; Christine Hatchard, Ron Rooke and John Anderson (skip) who led from the fifth end to win by 19 shots to 16.
