It will be all change at Phear Park Bowling Club next season as a new team of officers was elected at a well attended annual general meeting last Saturday, writes Laurie Harries.

Retiring chairman John Anderson said the season had been disrupted by poor weather but overall it had been successful. He expressed thanks to fellow officers and individuals who had made this possible.

Captain Richard Cooper reported that playing results were a little disappointing compared with last season’s centenary but many of the games that were lost were very close. The club had supported many local clubs by entering rinks in domestic competitions.

Both Over-60s squads had poor seasons with the A team relegated and the B team not quite able to climb the final hurdles and they finished their season in fifth place.

Secretary John Robins gave a comprehensive report on activities during the season and outlined plans for next year including coaching and recruitment.

Margo Allen reported on the ladies fixtures when the highlight had been the capture of Madeira’s Pomeroy Trophy for the third successive year.

The ladies struggled in the non badged triples league but perhaps next season would restore their fortunes.

Bob Smith, club treasurer, said the club’s finances remained in good order and the club had operated profitably over the season although income was down slightly, mainly due to the weather.

Mr Smith said that the increasing cost of travel would need to be addressed but at this stage he felt there was no need for an increase in membership subscriptions – which brought the loudest cheer of the afternoon!

The officers next season will be: chairman - Rob Mottershead; captain - Mike Pope; vice-captain - Margo Allen; . secretary - John Robins; treasurer - Bob Smith; fixtures secretary - Peter Burch; competitions secretary - Leighton Burston
