Phear Park’s tournament week opened last Sunday with the popular mixed triples competition, writes Lawrie Harries.
This year’s winners were the Exonia trio of Nikki Parsons, Alf Parsons and Neil Lugg and the runners-up were Dianzee Lowe, Rods Davidson and Gerry Roberts from Budleigh.
Park’s friendly programme continued with a visit from Exonia which resulted in a win for Park by 14 shots. The best performance came from Sarah Westacott’s triple of John Horne and Ron Rooke who secured a 23-10 triumph.
The triple of Jackie Cruse, Roland Heale and skip John Dill ended 19-9 up whilst Margaret Lock, David Horne and John Robins (skip) were generally in control and won by 14 shots to 11.
A visit to Paignton proved less productive however, with the home club comfortable winners of a five rinker in a game curtailed by rain. Park’s only wining rink was Liz Nelson, David Dowden, Lesley Trewin and Peter Burch (skip) who were ahead by 16 shots to 12 when rain stopped play.
Honourable mention also for Leighton Burston’s rink of Margaret Lock, John Bell and John Anderson who finished strongly to claim a 15 all draw.
To add insult to injury one of Park’s party left his car just within range of a six hit from the adjacent cricket field and left Paignton with both pride and his car dented.
The end of the heat wave brought an end to Park A squad’s excellent run of wins in the Over-60s League.
Park lost on both rinks at North Tawton and overall by 35 shots to 28.
This is not the whole story as on one rink Park conceded a five on the last end to lose by four shots.
On the second rink Park dropped five shots over the last three ends to lose by three.
An excellent example of defeat being snatched from the jaws of victory.
Park’s B team kept up their good form with another win away at Cullompton.
John Anderson, Rob Mottershead and John Walker (skip) eased to a comfortable 24-9 win.
The second rink, however, were always behind and went down by nine shots, but overall six points to Park.
