On a fine, sunny, warm afternoon Phear Park entertained Heavitree in a five rink friendly, writes Lawrie Harries.

Heavitree were the first club that the newly formed Phear Park Bowling Club defeated in 1911.

As far as we are aware none of the participants last week remembers that great day. Although a few of the visitors were heard to mutter ‘remember 1911’ at the start!

The result of this latest friendly was that the clubs shared the rinks two apiece with the fifth tied. Overall scores gave victory to the visitor’s by12 shots.

Park’s winning rinks were Brian Halsey, Liz Nelson, John Anderson and John Robins (skip) who ended 21-13 ahead.

Peter Burch’s rink of Janet Martin, Lawrie Harries and Ron Rooke scored ten shots over the last four ends to win by 24 shots to 17.

John Relph’s rink of Tim Flather, Margaret Kenny and Mike Pope looked to be in trouble at tea, but a good second half saw them able to draw level and finish at 18 shots apiece.

Park’s Over 60s triples squads both lost although each gained two points by winning one rink. At Heavitree, the A team rink of Ralph Cook, John Whyte and John Dill (skip) were holding five shots before the Heavitree skip reduced this to one with the last wood of the game leaving Park winners by 14 to 13.

The B team made the longer trip to Okehampton but could only win on one rink. Billy Hanley, Mike Pope and Dave Martin (skip) were 16 -10 ahead after the 18 ends, but this was not quite enough to make up the loss on the second rink.

Park travelled to Feniton – accompanied by heavy rain - to play in the Top Club competition. This is a competition involving five disciplines. It was clear from the outset that one or two Park players were looking for somewhere less cold and less wet – at home in the bath, perhaps.

The rain eased after an hour by which time Feniton had a very firm grip on all disciplines and on the night they were much too strong for Park.
