Phear Park’s week got off to a good start with a home win against Hatherleigh by 22 shots in a five rinks triple friendly, writes Lawrie Harries.

John Robins skipped Billy Hanley and Ron Rooke to a 21-11 victory. Although winning only seven of the 18 ends, a six on the 15th proved conclusive for Freda Relph, John Whyte and John Anderson (skip) who won by 15 shots to 14.

Park’s third winning rink was Tim Flather, Christine Hatchard and Bob Smith (skip) who were 14-10 ahead at the close.

Park’s next friendly took them to neighbours Budleigh where the home club were comfortable winners by 23 shots. Park generally found the unusually heavy green difficult, but according to the locals the green plays on the heavy side when the tide is in!

Park salvaged a little pride with a win from John Anderson’s triple of Bob Smith and Margaret Kenny.

Phear Park ladies’ have had mixed fortunes lately in the unbadged triples league. A narrow win against St. Thomas (Exeter) was followed by defeats against Ottery St. Mary and Feniton.

Playing at home Park ladies’ overcame St Thomas by two shots. The triple of Freda Relph, Margaret Kenny and Janet Martin (skip) came from two shots down to win 16-13.

The second rink of Jacky Cruse, Christine Hatchard and Glenda Pope (skip) were ahead for most of the game, but went into the last end four shots down, which put St Thomas ahead overall. However, a three on the last end regained the lead for Park which gave them six points.

Park men’s B side, playing in the over-60s league, achieved an excellent win over visitors Honiton by 11 shots. John Relph’s rink of David Maunder and David Dowden finished 19-16 ahead. The second triple of Billy Hanley, Ron Rooke and Mike Pope (skip) scored an impressive 24-16 win.

Meanwhile, Park’s A team - ‘the nearly men’ – nearly won another game!

The triple of John Odell, John Robins and Bob Smith (skip) had a very comfortable 20- 9 win in a fixture played at Exonia.

Unfortunately, Park’s second triple never got going on a very fast green and the end result was that Park lost overall by four shots.
