One of Phear Park’s most popular internal competitions – the Dick Mann triples - was played out, on a ‘round robin’ basis, last weekend, writes Laurie Harries.

The winners were Brian Halsey, Joy Mottershead and John Anderson (skip) and the runners-up were the tri of Rob Mottershead together with Mike and Glenda Pope.

Park travelled to Cheltenham Spa for a seven rink friendly during the week and their squad was augmented by several friends from Topsham and Madeira.

Cheltenham’s green suffers from a minor handicap as there is literally no shade.

Normally of little concern, but with temperature in the mid thirties this was a recipe for sunburned noses and socks that needed wringing out after 21 ends.

The hosts finished winners by eight shots with three rinks drawn and Park’s captain’s rink skipped by Peter Burch, and including Nelson/Doreen Richards, Lawrie Harries and Margo Allen, who claimed an 18-11 win.

David Dowden, Margaret Kenny, Faye Downend and Bob Smith finished 14 shots apiece.

Rob Mottershead, Joy Mottershead, Ron Rooke and John Robins (skip) won the last three ends to tie 15-15.

Park’s final contribution to improving inter-county relations came when a Topsham based rink skipped by Norman Owen came from eleven shots down to win the last six ends – including a four on the final end – to secure a 16-all draw. Weather more akin to the Costa del Sol is obviously the norm in Topsham!

On the journey home the Phear Park Glee Club provided backing for tapes by fifties pop stars like Tommy Steele, Adam Faith, Guy Mitchell and Frank Ifield.

Although a coach load of pensioners yodelling ‘I Remember You’ must have come close to stopping traffic on the M5!

Altogether this was a hugely enjoyable day due to the hard work of Freda and John Relph.

Park’s Over-60s triples teams got into the points – but only just. One A squad rink drew despite leading by 10 shots at one stage.

The B squad secured a win and six points at Cullompton. Mike Pope’s rink of David Maunder and Rob Mottershead led from the start and finished 20 shots to 9 up.

The second rink dropped 13 shots over the last five ends to lose by four shots.

Members were saddened to learn of the death of member Les Parr after a long illness. A fine bowler, an excellent club man and a real character, he will be missed.
