A very busy week at Phear Park after all the excitement of the annual tournament is forgotten and the good news is that both our Over-60s teams will continue as they are for the 2019 season, writes David Evans.

The A team had a very good 8-0 victory over Okehampton at home which ensured that they would continue in the same division.

Most of the teams in the division were so evenly matched, the 14 points from the last two matches quickly pushed Phear Park towards the top of the table and they were helped by the super 24-4 win by J Horne, R Heale and Bob Smith.

The B team had another heavy defeat at Heavitree and finished the season second from bottom, but due to the technicality of a team withdrawing from the league they remain in the same division for 2019.

We can now relax and enjoy the friendlies, but were soundly beaten while visiting Bradninch, winning on just one rink and losing overall 74-57.

A visit from Seaton did not help matters and although we shared the rinks we were defeated 56-70 and both teams were unable to cope well with the extra fast green caused by the continued drought!

It is very rare to see the Phear Park green looking so yellow, but it is helping the bowlers who are always complaining of shoulder problems while playing on the usual green, green, grass of Phear Park!

It looks like a busy Autumn for all green keepers , having to cope with these unusual conditions and repairing greens.

We finished the week happier with a very good win against a visiting Paignton side , winning on three rinks, and 90-62 overall which included a virtual walkover by the triple of M Lock, J Whyte and J Robins of 30-7!

The club competitions finals take place during the coming weekend (September 8 and 9) and, as is very often usual for such small clubs, there is usually one competitor who is very involved in many of the finals.

This year it is the turn of Rod Davidson, who appears in no fewer than in five finals while Peter Burch and John Robins are appearing in two finals and we are looking forward to some interesting games with the weather continuing very warm.

The club has not been as successful in friendlies as in previous years, but I know the players are determined to improving matters in 2019.
