Phear Park’s tournament week opened last Sunday with a mixed triples competition, writes Lawrie Harries.
An all-day affair played on a round-robin basis the winners of a closely contested competition were Heavitree members Marilyn O’Callaghan, Peter O’Callaghan and Terry Chown.
Close behind in second place were the Phear Park trio of Janet Martin, Margo Allen and David Martin. Third place went to a triple from Madeira.
Prizes were presented by Bruce Penny and Stella Tomkinson on behalf of competition sponsors Penny’s Estate Agents.
A Park rink recently won the prestigious Budleigh club competition for the Victory Cup.
The win will carry even more prestige once the Cup is found! The successful rink was Tim Flather, John Whyte, Peter Burch and John Dill (skip).
Park hosted a four rink men’s friendly with neighbours Madeira but went down by 13 shots. Somehow both clubs turned up a player short and it was probably fitting that the triple should end in a draw.
Park’s David Maunder, Billy Hanley and John Anderson (skip) drew 19 all after coming back from 14-4 down.
Park took four triples to Heavitree and won on three winning overall by 10 shots.
Best performing triple was Christine Hatchard, Peter Burch and John Dill (skip) who finished 16-11 ahead.
Mike Pope skipped David Dowden and Faye Downend to a 13-9 win. While Margaret Kenny, Rob Mottershead and Glenda Pope were winners by 14 shots to 10. Park’s A team took two points for a winning rink in the Over-60s triples league but went down overall by two shots.
Brian Halsey, John Whyte and John Dill (skip) picked up six shots over the last three ends to win by 21 shots to 19.
Perhaps things are beginning to change!
