Honiton Thai-boxer Sonny Perez landed Word and Intercontinental titles in Thongsala, Ko Pagn-Nagan last month.
Perez travelled to Thailand in a party of six from the Honiton and Exeter FSC Muay Thai gyms.
The 38-year old first fought for the vacant WRSA World Thai-boxing title, knocking out his opponent, a veteran of over 200 contests, not the original 20 he was told before the journey started! The referee stopped the fight in then 2nd round and declared Perez the winner.
Eleven days later Perez was back I the ring to contest the Intercontinental title. Originally matched against Petch Mai who had previously beaten another English FSC fighter, Matt Wales, a change had to be made with an injured Petch Mai withdrawing leaving Perez to fight the veteran Pan Sak who had recently outpointed Ota from the Czech Republic. Pan Sak is a veteran of 250 Muay Thai fights.
This was a challenging contest and although Perez scored two flash knockdowns in rounds two and three it was evident that the heat, as well as Pan Sak’s clinching, were wearing Perez down. In round four Pan Sak caught Sonny with some strong elbows to the jaw and eye and looked to be dominating the round pushing Perez back.
Perez changed tactics, and, after feinting a left jab, landed a heavy left hook which sent Pan Sak to the canvas, the referee immediately stopping the contest. Perez’s opponent was fine after being seen by the doctor.
Matt Vickers also won his first Muay Thai contest winning by TKO against Sam K in Round two. If you are interested in learning Muay Thai please call 07791607735
