Saturday’s monthly medal was a real treat for the gardening golfers taking part, writes Michael Knapton.

The heavy rains of Friday night and early Saturday morning not only gave our thirsty gardens a good drink (saving lots of us from that particular chore), but helped to take some of the fire out of the parched East Devon course.

Indeed, 24 of the 93 golfers shot under or equivalent to the days’ par of 71. All of these probably came off the course expecting to be in the running for not only winning their divisions, but picking up the coveted Roy Greenaway Medal.

However, the ones who were successful were Charlie Stafford (obviously more time to practice following retirement) with net 69 in Division Three.

He was closely followed by Peter de la Mare who shot a net 71. The Division Two leader was Bill Edwards with a net 66, closely followed by Brian Welch on net 69.

The star of the day was Andy Pelosi in the Premier Division and his net 65 won him the main trophy. Incredibly, he was followed by four 66’s carded by Richard Eltham, Tom Partridge (best gross of 68), Robin Murray and Robert Dance.

There were also numerous twos, but special mention must go to Steve Harrison who, after 20 years or so of golf, got his first hole in one at the 10th.

For this feat he will receive a Hugo Boss watch as a result of the club subscribing to the Howdidido system.
