It has been another relatively quiet week in the run-up to the Madeira club and county finals. A couple of friendlies had been scheduled, but one was cancelled, writes Jenny Smith.

A combined Cogenhoe and St Crispin’s touring team came with seven mixed rinks and a dozen visitors to Madeira on Tuesday. After a rather dismal bank holiday, the sun returned and all enjoyed a lovely late summer afternoon on the greens. Madeira won four rinks to the visitors three.

There was some excellent bowling from two of the home teams to help ensure an overall 141-118 win.

John Bellamy, Maureen Willis, Graham Ellis and Debbie Fox took top rink honours by winning with plus 18 shots, with Jean Rainton, Matt Marriott, Brian Poulter and Diana Cantor winning by plus16 shots.

Angela Fish’s excellent run in the County Ladies Over-55 singles came to an end at Paignton this week.

She had the closest of wins against Jean Chudleigh 21-20, but lost her semi-final round against Moyra Webber of Bittern Park by 21 shots to 14. She was obviously disappointed not to reach the final, but well pleased with progressing so far in the competition.

Aaron Southgate reached the last 16 in the national two-wood singles when he lost to Peter Ward of Hampshire by 16 shots to 12. However, it was a great effort to get that far.

The ladies’ representative team were disappointed to lose to Plymouth Sir Francis Drake in the quarter-final of the Grace Mathews Top Club by four disciplines to one.

Deirdre Norman had a terrific four-wood singles game to win 18-13. There was a nail-biting finish to the entire match with it coming down to the last end of the triples and the fours, Madeira unfortunately losing both, the fours by just one shot. The finals of this competition will be played at Madeira on Wednesday.

However, the highlight of the week was Jude Latta’s Lady Captain’s Day on Friday when she offered a delicious cream tea for the lady members playing and her invited and honoured guests.

The afternoon began with a spider, won by Sue Burr, followed by an 18 end triples match played in glorious sunshine.

The match was won by Angela Denner, playing with Margaret Mahon and Gloria Taylor with a shot difference of plus 15.

Captain Jude said that her gift would go to the Exmouth & District Talking Newspaper charity and together with donations on the day, £107.50 was raised.

The Madeira men’s representative team travelled to Torquay on Sunday to play for a place in the finals of the County Top Club.

With their excellent form so far this season they had high hopes of beating Pennycross in their semi-final.

The match began well with Jim Wherlock winning the two wood singles and Aaron Southgate winning the four wood singles.

But Pennycross came back, winning both the pairs and the triples and then went on to beat Madeira in the fours. Congratulations on reaching the semi-finals, gentlemen.
