With some of the best soaring conditions for many years, Pete Startup, from Ottery St Mary scored more than 10, 657 points to win the Task week, writes Jill Harmer.

Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (DSSC) members, Pete, in his Discus glider, and Wyn Davies, from Topsham, with his LS7, competed at the Bristol and Gloucester Gliding Club.

With daily racing tasks set into Oxfordshire, the Midlands and East Anglia, consistency is the name of the game and Pete achieved a first place, four second places and a third place during the week which saw cloud bases at 7000ft above sea level.

Wyn didn’t fare quite as well coming fifth overall with 9738 points, as he pressed on a little too fast and landed out in fields on some days, when there were no clouds to mark the thermals.
