Otterton 5, Honiton Town 1
Otterton emerged comfortable winners in the meting between the Fresha League Division Six top two.
The Otters went into the contest in the knowledge that victory would give them a six-point cushion at the summit of the table.
It was a nervous start from the Otters and it needed goalkeeper Adam Williams and his defenders to be at their best to deny the visitors an early lead.
Gradually Otterton grew into the contest and they were close to opening the scoring when Kev Pitt went close. Shortly after, good approach play from Lee Mitchell ended with Pitt sliding the ball home to break the deadlock.
Just a minute later it was 2-0 with Pitt reacting quickest after a Ben Yeomans free-kick was well saved by the Honiton glovesman.
The visitors came back strongly, but could not get the better of the impressive Williams between the Otters posts.
Much of the Honiton attacking play was also thwarted by the organised Otters back line of Si Trim, Nick Tweedie, Lee Mitchell and Luke Iddon.
Just after the half hour mark Yeomans curled a corner straight into then net to make it 3-0 at half-time.
Within a minute of the restart Yeomans sent a exquisite lob over the keeper to make it 4-0.
With Jon Dack, Gary Williams, Adam Rolls and Yeomans all putting in good shifts with some solid tackling, there was no way back for the visitors and the Otters made it 5-0 when Iddon beat his man before crossing to Ryan Mitchell who volleyed the ball sweetly home!”
Late on the visitors netted a consolation goal.
Otterton used all three subs with Lee Chapman, Danny Marish and player-boss Pete McLean all getting action.
On Saturday the Otters entertain a Silverton side that inflicted a rare defeat on the tale toppers when the side’s met in Mid Devon last month.
Otterton team: Adam Williams, Luke Iddon, Lee Mitchell, Simon Trim, Nick Tweedie, Adam Rolls, Gary Williams, Jon Dack, Ben Yeomans, Ryan Mitchell, Kev Pitt. Subs; Lee Chapman, Danny Marish and Pete Mclean.
