Orographic clouds not an issue for Jackson as the East Devon vice captain gets a handicap cut!

Eighty-two hopeful seniors played at East Devon for the monthly Stableford, writes Paul Willoughby.

The later starters had the best of the day as the early players had to contend with mist (or fog!) on the top holes. By midday however the fog (or mist!) had lifted and the views were as good as ever. Those of us lucky to play at that time had a splendid example of orography over the 15th and 16th fairways. Now pay attention as I shall be testing you later. We had a south south westerly wind blowing warm wet air across the sea and up the cliffs by the 16th tee. As the air rises it cools and orographic clouds formed about 50 feet above the cliffs – for those of us who like clouds, a lovely sight. There; who said you don’t learn anything from reading my articles? Now the test; where did the word ‘cloud’ originate? Yes, you’re right – 13th century English, the word was ‘clod’ meaning ‘a mass of vapour’. The word ‘clod’ is now used to describe someone who three putts!

For one of our number, clouds (orographic or otherwise), mist (or fog) were no hindrance. Stewart Jackson, our club’s vice captain had an excellent 39 points which reduces his handicap from 9 to 8. Well done, Stewart.

The other leading scores were: 2, Taff Powell, 36 (19 now 18); 3, Kim Johnson, 35 (12); 4, Fra Williams, 34 (18); 5, Geoff Walden, 34 (8); 6, Mike Knapton, also 34 (19)

There was a twos pot of £75 to be shared between eight players.
