Coulton Newman and Matt Case made the long trip to Penzance last Saturday night, to face opponents from the home club, writes Phil Crook.

Coulton showed that he had learned plenty from his first outing three weeks ago, as this time he made a much steadier start.

The first round saw him use his left jab behind a tight guard as he eased himself into the bout.

The second round saw his opponent, Kainon Dayus, really step up the action and this had Newman struggling briefly, but he re-gained his composure and ended the round in control.

It was clearly very close and all to play for in the final round. Both lads traded punches as they went all out for the win and Newman seemed to gain as much from the encouragement of the raucous Cornish crowd as Dayus.

Coulton had just done enough, as he was awarded a unanimous decision, but all three judges only gave it to him by two points.

For Matt Case, the story of his bout revolved around the first round in his clash with Corey Lagden.

Inexplicably, he made a very slow start and this saw Lagden build up a large lead. After some encouragement from the corner, Case made a much brighter start to the second round and although he won it, the margin was nowhere near the first round deficit.

Realising this, Lagden did all he could in the final session to frustrate Case by holding and staying in close to prevent Matt from scoring with clean shots. It was no surprise when the Cornishman gained a points win, but it could have been oh so different if it wasn’t for the first round.

Case will get his chance for revenge over Lagden with the pair due to meet at the Pavilion on Friday March 9. A 14-bout bill is being arranged with lads from the local clubs, Exmouth, Lympstone and Exeter facing opponents from across the South West.

There is also due to be a female contest, the first for two seasons, with girls from Bournemouth and Yeovil competing.

Tickets priced at £12 are on sale at Auto Save, Seymours, Budleigh Wines and the Heavitree Inn.
