Newcomer Rock wins opening matches in new Exe TT league sessions

The new season has been welcomed in at the Exe Table Tennis club with a successful open evening bringing in a large group of youngsters and some new mature players.

This year all new players will benefit from structured coaching sessions from head club coach Howard Back, assisted by Martin Atkin and Paul Humphries on the Robot.

Junior players Sam Richards and Matthew Wellington will be helping out with table tennis coaching and fun games for the junior newcomers.

The new junior league, run by Richard Wellington and Sam Richards, attracted 18 keen players who were spit into three divisions.

Each player will compete against everyone in their division playing best of five games over a five week period and points awarded for winning games and match.

After five weeks the top two in each division will gain promotion and the bottom two will be relegated so there will be regular changes and new people to play.

On the first night there was some outstanding play by newcomers Andrew Rock, winning three straight games 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 and Jack Barrington, winning 11-1, 11-3, 11-5.

Joe Heard won the first games 11-1 and 11-5 whilst Harry Rowland played progressively better with an impressive last game of 11-9.

Chris Wardle was on form winning three straight games, while Jack May was more evenly matched against Will Dean, but eventually won 11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.

Wojciech Cyon beat Chris Rogers 11-8, 12-10, 11-6 and Ryan Brittan won his match in four games. There was a good atmosphere amongst the juniors and fair play throughout.
