Bob Donald, who plays croquet at Budleigh Salterton Croquet club, has just returned from visiting his family in New Zealand having won a gold medal in Association Croquet at the recent Masters Games in Dunedin, writes Elaine Marsh.

His success came in Division 1 of the tournament.

Bob explained that the Masters encourages older participants to continue with their sport and are held every second year in Dunedin. This year was the 25th games and attracted 8,000 entrants competing in 70 different sports over nine days.

The croquet competition was for the over 45’s and had 40 entrants from all over New Zealand. The competition was hard-fought, but just as important was the socialising and entertainment in the Games Village at the end of each day. It really lived up to its motto of ‘Great sport, great mates, great memories’.

Bob Donald said: “I really don’t understand why we can’t have a similar Masters Games in this country. But then the whole of New Zealand is sport mad. Eight-hundred young children, including two of my grandchildren, took part in a triathlon when I was there, so the three of just had to wear our medals in the Masters Village that evening.”
