East Budleigh Reserves 1, Topsham Town Thirds 0
The beautiful game returned to Vicarage Road East Budleigh last Saturday with another superbly prepared playing surface for the two teams, writes Mark Auton.
Unfortunately the first half did not live up to its billing with the lack of match play easy to see as chances very sparse at both ends.
Thankfully for Budleigh, Damien Mortimore provided a piece of magic from the bench, and, on debut, to seal an important three points against the team who sat third in the league before kick-off.
In the first half a couple of early corners for the away side saw Rich Wyatt head off the line, but the talking point of the first period came after a quarter of an hour.
Ben Wyatt’s ball over the visiting defence was picked up by the run of Dan Atkinson who was met by an oncoming keeper who proceeded to clips his legs after going past him; Only a free-kick was awarded with the Topsham stopper very fortunate to not even receive a booking after denying a goal scoring opportunity
For the remainder of the half Harry Trick tried his best from the midfield to drive his side forward, whilst Atkinson did his best upfront, but the sides went in at the break scoreless
The second half was much better; Ben Wilks found himself in a fine position as an opposing defender miss-kicked but hit his effort wide, before Budleigh made a match winning treble change with Joe Rosser, Rich Pratt and Mortimore all joining the action.
The breakthrough came on the hour when the latter, five minutes into his first game picked up the ball in the Topsham area before showing some tidy footwork to dink the ball past the keeper and into the net.
This lifted the atmosphere and Budleigh themselves; Ben Wyatt saw his shot blocked, whilst Trick had a shot charged down.
Topsham tried their best in the final quarter, but Budleigh keeper Mark Bown dealt competently with what was thrown at him, ably assisted by his defence of Player Manager Colin Jeans, Adam Wheatley, Gary Western and Man of the Match Rich Wyatt.
This Saturday Budleigh visit Silverton in search of a similar outcome. The first eleven will hope to return to action with a victory when they make the trip to Cullompton for their Division 1 encounter.
