Appledore 4, Budleigh Salterton 1

Although The Robins lost their good away record this was far from a dominant display by the home side, as has been suggested elsewhere, writes Alan Beer.

Quite the contrary, it was the Robins who created far more chances than the hosts, especially in the first period, but were unable to apply the final finish.

After six minutes Carl Everest crossed to the far post, but it was just out of reach for George Pannell.

A few minutes late a 25-yard volley from Everest grazed the crossbar. The first home threat came on 25 minutes when a blocking tackle was deemed a foul.

The resulting free kick from Jamie Frackleton took a wicked deflection before passing Adrian Pullin in the visitor’s goal.

A minute before the break the home side increased their lead when a shot by Seth Hodorowski from 25-yards out somehow found its way past Pullin.

Seven minutes after the re-start the Robins spurned yet another chance.

The home defence failed to clear properly leaving Danny Williams a chance to lob Kurtis Parkin in the home goal, but the shot also cleared the bar!

With 65 minutes gone the Robins again failed to finish following a goalmouth scramble, and from a long clearance Keith Shapland added goal number three for the home side.

Ten minutes later the Robins reduced the arrears when Everest found Williams wide on the right and his cross was headed home by Peter Grover.

Budleigh were now pushing hard to try and get something when another quick break led to a mistake in visiting defence gifting home goal number four to Nick Glover.

The defeat sees Budleigh slip to third in the table.

This Saturday they entertain Totnes and Dartington at Greenway Lane (3pm).

Budleigh team: Pullin, Hancock, Everest, Ellis, Pallett, Nield (Carr), Sale, Wright, Grover, Pannell (Schlaefli), Williams.
