It’s been a busy week for the Madeira Ladies with among other things competitions for the Pomeroy Trophy and the Mary Baldwyn Trophy, all played in perfect bowling weather, writes Jenny Smith.

The week started with the Pomeroy Trophy to which seven local clubs – Topsham, Budleigh Salterton, Exonia, Feniton, Phear Park, Seaton and Sidmouth, had been invited to send a rink to play a drive against seven Madeira teams. Topsham’s team skipped by Margaret Ewings with Freda Relph, Sue Bendall and Ruth Voysey came out on top with plus 15 shots to win the Shield.

The Mary Baldwyn Triples is an internal competition, also a drive, in which 12 teams took part. Ann Bellamy and her team of Janet Allen and Jean Bagnall did exceptionally well to clock up plus 24 shots to win the rosebowl.

This week also saw the start of the Bowls Devon Ladies Benevolent Triples competition. Two Madeira teams survived to play a further round this week – Annette Flockhart with Pat Boman and Jill Perrin and Liz Smerdon and her team of Sue Harriott and Christine Macaulay.

Janine Orchard continues to do well. Playing at Madeira, she won a close section final of the Bowls Devon Over 55 singles against Ann Joyner of Seaton by 21 shots to 20.

Club competitions are in the final rounds and the first line-up for the Ladies Pairs final is Jenny Smith with Josie Glaister versus Angela Fish with Penny Preece.

There was a recent friendly fixture against Heavitree played at Madeira as two triples and both of them won by the home team. Brenda Marks skipped Captain Pat Wilkins and Nicky Fiddimore to a 15 shots to 10 win and Sandie Cox did similarly well with Jill Perrin and Margaret Humphries to win by 20 shots to 11.

The week ended with an excellent win for the ladies of Madeira A who played Tiverton West End at Heavitree on Sunday winning three of the five disciplines for a place in the semi-finals at Madeira on 31st August. Angela Fish and Pat Harris decisively won the 4-wood and two-wood singles respectively with scores of 21-8 and 17-8. Liz Healy led her team of Lynn Eveleigh, Annette Flockhart and Jacky Howle to victory in the four’s which was a close-run thing with a score of 24 shots to 22.
