Madeira six net Johns Trophy slots

11:53 29 May 2014

In the past week, the Madeira ladies bowled in a friendly against neighbours Phear Park, writes Mary Ann Dowrick.

The game of three triples, ended in a two out of three rink win for our ladies.

Skip Carole Worth with Janet Grundy and Ann Bellamy, 24-16; Skip Mary Ann Dowrick with Kate Andrews and Molly Cooper, 14-11. Skip Dierdre Norman with Lyn Halpin and Pat Wilkins, 17-21.

The first round of the Grace Mathews Top Club had a grand result when Madeira’s A team won their match against Sidmouth.

Madeira won three out of the five disciplines needed to advance to the next round.

Madeira’s B team will meet Feniton on June 16, and will hope for a similar result.

Congratulations to Angie Fish, Jan Roberts, Jacky Howle, Liz Healy, Christine Macaulay and Liz Smerdon who were invited to trial for the Johns Trophy squad and have made the team.

This is an elite squad and Madeira are proud that six of our ladies made the cut.

In the latest non badged triples league Madeira had mixed results. Our ladies drew against Pinces Gardens, lost against Exonia and won against Phear Park. Skip Brenda Marks with Mavis Prew and Janet Allen 17-13; Skip Dee Williams with Jean Bagnall and M. Clook 16-10. In the Exeter and District League against Crediton, Madeira lost on both rinks.

Janine Orchard won her game in the County Over 55 singles against Rita Barwick. Sue Harriott with Christine Macaulay won their game against Jan Roberts and Catherine King in the National Over 55 pairs.

Sandy Cox and Jenny Charles won their County over 55 pairs against Honiton pair Hiscox and Raynor from Honiton.

Finally, only one Madeira trio succeeded into the section final of the County triples. Well done to Skip Liz Smerdon with Sue Harriott and Christine Macaulay.
