Archant

It has been a very successful period again at Madeira with individual and team success for the ladies to celebrate, writes Catherine King.

First up there’s news of a national singles finals date for Jan Roberts after she triumphed in the regional finals winning a thrilling game in Plymouth by a single shot at 21-20.

Her prize is a place at the national finals in Melton Mowbray (not too many pork pies Ken, grandma would not be happy!).

Hot on the heels of the Roberts success was similar joy for the club’s ladies Yetton Trophy team who sent four rinks to Donyatt to play against Atherley and managed to win on three of them to earn the team a berth in the national finals at Darlington on April 20, where they will meet Egham in a semi-final tie for a place in the grand final.

The most prolific winning rink was that of Angela Denner, Dee Norman, Janine Orchard and Sue Harriott who won 33-10.

There was also a big victory for the rink of Christine Macaulay, Sandie Cox, Annette Flockhart and Liz Smerdon who triumphed 31-16.

The other winning team was that of Jill Perrin, Veda Bevan, Jean Rainton and Jacky Howle who won 24-21 whilst Jan Roberts, Jenny Smith, Brenda Marks and Catherine King were beaten 25-13.

This is the furthest Madeira ladies have gone in this particular competition since the indoor club was opened on November 21, 1981

One thing is very clear! Grace will certainly be smiling looking down on this latest success and had she been with us she would indeed have been so proud and thrilled.

The Madeira club competitions are well underway now with some having reached the semi-final stage and we will endeavour to round up the news on them in next weeks report.

Now that the weather looks set to improve why not pop down on a Friday to see just what we have on offer at Madeira.

The Friday sessions run from 4.30pm and all comers will be made very welcome.
