This being tournament week, normal bowls procedure at Madeira has been suspended and members are just as likely to have been cooking, marking, umpiring and working in the bar than bowling, writes Jenny Smith.

However, there are some small items of news. Madeira B were disappointed to be knocked out of the Bowls Devon Interclub competition.

They played Tiverton West End last Wednesday at Culm Vale and lost by just three shots – 33 shots to 30!

However, they are still in the Grace Mathews Top Club competition so all hopes are pinned on that.

Five Madeira lady members (Angela Fish, Liz Healy, Jacky Howle, Jan Roberts and Liz Smerdon) played for Devon in the Johns Trophy against Warwickshire at Portishead on July 12, and were delighted to win the close encounter by three shots (each county winning three rinks) for a place in the semi-final against Lincolnshire at the National Finals at Leamington Spa on August 2.

Liz Smerdon has also done well to reach the National Finals in the Over-55 singles with a win against Ruth Rogers of Torquay Kings of 21 shots to 10.

This weekend the Bowls Devon two-wood triples competition was held at Budleigh Salterton with no less than 8 Madeira teams taking part.

The section final was played on Sunday afternoon between two Madeira teams – Jacky Howle with Jan Roberts and Jenny Smith and Liz Smerdon with Liz Healy (substitute) and Christine Macaulay.

It was a difficult and closely fought game which Liz Smerdon’s team won on the last end when they took four shots to achieve an overall win of 14 shots to 12.
