With the season now off in full swing, I want, on all our behalf’s to congratulate Jenny Smith and Niki Fiddimore on being presented with their county badges, writes Matt Marriott.

Well done, to you both as they do not come easily!

The half yearly Open Day was held on Saturday with a good turn out thanks to all the club coaches and those who assisted them.

The week started off with the Eric Lewis Drive on Monday in which nine rinks took part. Always a game played in good spirit which saw the team skipped by Bob Burch with Jenny Turner, Jenny Charles and Martin Langford triumphant with a plus 18 score. (Yes Bob, I did notice it was your second win !) I won’t mention the names of Team E who were minus 17!

Once again the weather came up trumps with a sunny afternoon.

Our Cornish neighbours called on Tuesday as part of their president, Mike McPherson’s Devon tour together with his entourage of officials.

Clubs from all over Cornwall took part, some of whom we see again on our Cornish tour in September.

As their clubs all started bowling two weeks before we did it resulted in a win for them, but only by four shots overall. The Madeira top rink was skipped by Liz Healy with Robert Berry,Jean Bagnall and David Morrish winning by 31-7.

Their opposition then won the Cornish Pixie which they had to carry everywhere for 24 hours.

A good day had by all with pleasant company.

The Over 60s league got off to a start this week, but no results to hand as yet.

Bowls Devon president David Butterworth brought eight teams from various Devon Clubs to challenge us.

The weather wasn’t kind to start, but improved after tea to finish a game which saw Madeira defeated by 37 shots overall.

Five rinks won by Madeira were not enough to secure a win, the highest scoring rink was that of Derek Dommett, David Hay, Keith Weeks and skipped by Bob Burch (again) at 26 -15.

Reminder! The club AGM is being held at 6.30pm on Thursday, May 8 (that’s today! Please try to attend.

As I am away for the holiday weekend I am having to submit this report early, but I will catch up with events next week.
