Last week saw a marathon run of four days of finals played at Madeira as the indoor season comes to its conclusion, writes Catherine King.
Pride of place must go to Janine Orchard after she secured the ladies’ top honour beating Jacky Howl into the runners-up berth after a fine final match.
The ladies’ 2-wood singles champion is Jan Roberts who defeated Brenda Marks in another enthralling contest.
The new ladies’ self select triples champions are Christine Macaulay, Nikki Fiddimore and Sue Harriott with the runners-up being the threesome of Lin Halpin, Brenda Marks and Sandie Cox.
Jan Roberts was a winner again when she paired up with Pat Wilkins to claim the 3-wood pairs. The runners-up were Jose Glaister and Val Allam.
There was more success for Jan Roberts in the 2-wood triples where she teamed up with Janet Allen and Nikki Fiddimore to push Jan Worsfold, Fay Hughes and Veda Bevan into second spot.
In the open competitions there was victory for Mick Powell in the Bob Burch singles with Jan Roberts the runner-up, but Roberts returned to win the Bob Caddy 2-wood singles exacting revenge on Mick Powell!
Roberts also claimed success in the mixed pairs as she teamed up with Ken Roberts to defeat Jim Bradford and Sue Harriott in the final. The open triples champions are Jin Bradford, Annette Flockhart and Terry Reardon with Jan Roberts, Janine Orchard and Mike Orchard having to settle for the runners-up berth.
The men’s champion this season is Mick Powel after he defeated Terry Reardon whilst the men’s pairs was won by Mike Marks and Mick Powell who beat Ken Roberts and Robert Berry.
In the Bert Webb trophy singles competition for bowlers with twoyears or less
Experience there were no fewer than 20 bowlers competing. After some seven hours of action it was John Crosskerry who narrowly beat Peter Woods in the final.
After her long four-day stint at the club playing so many finals Jan Roberts then teamed up with Christine Macaulay, Liz Smerdon and Catherine King to play in the final of the Devon County four’s where they were edged into second place.
