Phear Park’s tournament week began with the popular mixed triples competition won this year by the Madeira triple of Brenda and Mike Markes and Mick Powell, writes Lawrie Harries.

The runners-up were Lucy and David Brown and Valerie Lockyer from Hatherleigh.

Budleigh bowlers must feel jinxed whenever they meet Phear Park! After Park B’s win in the over-60s triples last week, Park A completed the double over their neighbours by winning on both rinks.

John Horne, Peter Burch and Les Parr (skip) opened with a seven and clung on to their lead to finish 18–11 ahead.

Richard Cooper, John Whyte and Bob Smith (skip) were involved in a very tight game against an experienced Budleigh trio but a strong finish was enough to give them a 19-15 win and so a very welcome eight points to Park.

The B team lost to visitors Sidmouth by two shots. Mike Thomas, Ron Rooke and Gerry Sharland (skip) did their part by winning 20–13, but the second rink went down by nine shots. Just two points to Park and this defeat probably puts paid to any lingering hope of promotion.

Park travelled to Paignton and came away with a 20-shot win. This was in large part due to the efforts of Janet Martin, Richard Cooper, Ron Rooke and Leighton Burston (skip) who finished 26–7 ahead.

Park’s other winning rink was Margaret Lock, Margo Allen, John Robins and John Dill (skip) who had their noses in front from the start and they ended 19-11 winners.

Park suffered a home defeat to Exonia who won 72-71. Sarah Westacott’s rink of Les Parr, Rob Mottershead and Margo Allen finished 25-14 winners, whilst Jackie Cruse, Ron Rooke, Fay Downend and David Martin (skip) took a three on the last end to triumph 20-16.

The Park ladies suffered a seven shot defeat at Sidmouth although Margaret Lock, Faye Downend and Janet Martin (skip) took three shots on the last two ends to win 17-14.
