There were plenty of ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ for Madeira players in the County competitions over the past week, writes Matt Marriott.

The men’s singles, triples and fours were all lost, but Jim Wherlock and Martyn Eveleigh have reached the last 16 of the pairs.

This was the first time for many years that Madeira have been represented in three County semi-finals and congratulations go to them for getting that far, However, Cliff Skinner, Annette Flockhart and Terry Reardon have reached the quarter-finals of the mixed triples which is to be played at Madeira Bowling Club on a date yet to be announced. Good luck, to them all. We’re keeping everything crossed!

Glorious weather greeted the start of the 77th Madeira Bowling Club Open Tournament with 142 players from 35 clubs countrywide taking part. Fortunately, the thunderstorms came conveniently overnight so play was not interrupted in any way!

The final results showed the men’s singles winner as James Alcock, whilst the ladies’ singles winner was Hazel Jack.

The champions in the men’s pairs were Terry Reardon and Bill Davis with the mixed pairs won by Mick Powell and Sue Cridland.

Last, but certainly not least, the open triples was landed by the trio of F Stockard, M Humphries and T Mangan who all hail from GB Britton Club. Congratulations, to all those and thank you to all those who took part.

Thanks must go to all those who contributed greatly in the running of the tournament, all of them volunteers.

From umpires to markers to bar stewards, and especially those (men and women!) who slaved in the hot kitchen providing excellent food all day.

Finally with regard to the thanks, plenty of them to the tournament committee who did such a job ensuring the smooth running (at least it all appeared that way!).

Entries have already been received for the 2015 competition. All of this would not have happened without the hard work of the group of stalwarts who made sure the greens were in tip top condition in the absence of the groundsman.

As usual the Ladies Open Pairs will be held on Sunday, September 14, and I understand there is still room for more pairs.
