Madiera Ladies made the best possible start in the Exeter District League with a win on both rinks against Feniton, writes Mary Ann Dowrick.

Liz Smerdon skipped Jan Roberts, Mary Ann Dowrick and Catherine King to a 27-6 win whilst Angie Fish skipped Janine Orchard, Pat Harris and Christine Macaulay to a 17-14 success.

Next, mother nature lent a helping hand when play was abandoned due to a torrential downpour with Madeira leading on two rinks and tied on a third in a friendly against Honiton.

Top rink honours went to skip Sandy Cox with Janet Grundy and Mary Ann Dowrick 11-7, closely followed by skip Pat Boman with Lyn Halpin and Val Allam 11-9; and skip Veda Bevan with Fay Hughes and Ann Doidge 11-11

Now there’s not a lot to be said about the six rinks of bowlers representing the ladies against the men except to report that skip Jenny Smith with May Dyson, Jenny Charles and Sandra Mott stunned their male opponents with a 25-13 victory and skip Mary Ann Dowrick with Pat Harris, Janet Grundy and Shirley Smith were never really threatened as they cruised to a win on their rink 18-15.

However, when all rinks were tallied the ladies appear to have lost overall by 15 shots.

Next year Girls …!

Coaches reported that 22 of the 30 newbies who tried their hand at bowling on Open Day returned to the club for the first coaching session on Friday evening. They are being made welcome. Thanks are due to all who had a hand in making the open day a success.

Don’t forget, if you have family or friends who would like to try bowling, coaching is held each Friday evening at 6.30pm.
