Madeira ladies in Yetton Trophy joy

Madeira ladies are celebrating a double success, writes Catherine King.

The ladies have qualified for the national Yetton trophy and they have also been crowned champions of Division One of the DCLIBA Foxlands Trophy having won the Division Two title 12 months before.

This is the first time that Madeira has lifted the prestigious trophy.

The Division Two trophy was won in 1996, 2005, and 2013, so to win Division Two and then Division One in successive years is quite a feat.

At the recent outdoor half yearly meeting captain Pat Wilkins congratulated the indoor ladies on their successes and thanked all the committee members whose help is invaluable for the smooth running of the club and the success.

They also treated us to a lovely tea afterwards and so it’s a big round of thanks to all who baked such lovely cakes.

In terms of match action the Madeira ladies were 59-56 winners in a contest at Sidmouth.

Janet Grundy, Fay Hughes, Ann Doidge and Jean Rainton were 17-12 winners whilst there were narrow 22-21 defeats for the team of Christine Macaulay, Sandie Worcester, Lin Halpin and Veda Bevan and also the team of Jill Perrin, Mollie Cooper, May Dyson and Carole Worth.

The Madeira VPs entertained the Ladies’ patrons in the meeting that sees the annual that sees the indoor ladies captain to provide hot cross buns and mini Easter eggs for tea. The match was won by the Patrons by two shots!

May Dyson, Fay Hughes, Ann Doidge and Thelma Wildon lost 12-25, but there was a 16-13 win for Jose Glaister, Lin Halpin, Jenny Smith and Annette Flockhart whilst

Janet Grundy, Mollie Cooper, Veda Bevan and Jacky Howle were 20-12 winners.
