The Open Day that was held this week at Madeira is always a sign that the outdoor season is coming to an end, writes Jude Latta.

What’s more, for captain Mary Ann Dowrick, it was a time to round off her successful year as the club’s lady outdoor captain.

In what was a busy week, Mary Ann held her Captain’s Day meeting at Madeira with 10 teams taking part and with many guests attending including previous captains spanning Mary Ann’s 17 years as a member of Madeira.

But that event proved to be just the beginning for Mary Ann in the week for she was also the captain of the Madeira Interclub team that reached the semi-finals of that particular competition.

The team; Liz Healy, Jacky Howle, Janet Grundy, Lin Halpin, Deirdre Norman, Dee Williams and Jean Rainton, knew they were up against tough competition Kings, who had posted huge scores in all their previous rounds.

Despite the power of the opposition, the Madeira ladies were not downbeat and played their best, but could not overcome their opponents and ultimately went down to a 42-25 defeat.

None the less, it’s a case of well done, to all the players, on getting to the semi-finals.
