The big news of the week is the success of Madeira’s two teams in the Grace Mathews Top Club county competition, writes Jenny Smith.

On Monday evening Madeira B played Feniton at Feniton and were delighted to win all five disciplines. Madeira A went into bat on Wednesday morning at home against Seaton and did well, winning all but the singles.

The two teams are now looking forward to playing against each other in the section final on July 3.

Madeira B played their second round of the Interclub competition against Seaton at Sidmouth last week.

It was a closely fought contest which Madeira were pleased to win on both rinks. Their third round in this competition will be played against Morchard Bishop at Culm Vale this week.

Five Madeira bowlers, Liz Healy, Liz Smerdon, Angela Fish, Jan Roberts and Jacky Howle were in action on Saturday in the prestigious national competition, the John’s Trophy, played against Cornwall at Culm Vale and which Devon did well to win on five of the six rinks landing a 20 points to two victory.

Jacky Howle was proud to receive her John’s Trophy strip having played her first game for the county in this competition.

Liz Smerdon also played for Devon in the double-rink Walter Cup at Henlease on Sunday and her rink did well to win by two shots, but the game was drawn and had to be decided on an extra end which Warwickshire one

Jean Rainton did well in the Bowls Devon Ladies 2-wood competition. She reached the third round in which she faced strong opposition from Sue Evans of Honiton. Evans won by 19 shots to 17 on an extra end.

On Saturday, 24 ladies played in the Grace Mathews Triples internal competition, played annually in Grace’s memory. Jenny Smith and her team of Jenny Turner and Josie Glaister were delighted with their win, having been the only team to win all three 10-end games.

There has been one ladies-only friendly fixture this week at home against Abbrook Park.

Played as three triples, all games were close, but Abbrook Park won two of the three games and overall by 52 shots to 49. Vice captain Ann Doidge played with skip Veda Bevan and lead Lin Halpin on Madeira’s winning rink with a score of 18 shots to 12.
