In a busy final week of outdoor bowling, Madeira found time to play a couple of friendly matches, writes Jude Latta.

On Monday, over 30 Madeira members travelled to Cheltenham Spa for the ‘return match’ – the two sides having met in Exmouth earlier in the campaign.

This is a long-standing fixture which involves custody of a trophy by whichever team scores the most shots over the two matches.

Madeira had won the first meeting by a margin of nine shots and this meeting ended with the home side securing a similar winning margin leaving the contest as a tie.

The rink skipped by Madeira president John Bellamy that also included Angela Denner, Dave Clarbull and Ann Bellamy (first half) and Freda Relph (second half), secured a 33-10 success.

With the overall scores level it all meant that Madeira retain the trophy for another 12 months following their success in the 2016 meetings.
