Madeira duo Harriott and Shaw edged out in county mixed pairs final

It is true that the outdoor season will soon end, but the end of the season also brings a multitude of County Finals and the past week was no exception, writes Jude Latta.

In the county mixed pairs competition, Sue Harriott and Colin Shaw had already had a resounding quarter-finals win to reach the final stages, which were played at Madeira.

Their semi-final match was a much a closer affair when they faced Dave and Catherine Pickett from Newton Abbott with honours being shared.

By the 19th end Sue and Colin were just three shots ahead when Dave Pickett sent down a perfect wood to take two shots. With one end left and just one shot between them (15-14) it was anyone’s game!

The Newton Abbott pair were holding when Colin took the jack back to give Madeira shot. Sue followed with two well-placed woods to give them a place in the finals with their 18-14 win.

The final was against Dave Vinnicombe and Val Davis from Torquay, who had won their semi-final 25-15.

The Torquay pair took an early lead and were 7-1 to the good by the fourth end. Sue and Colin won four of the next six ends picking up two and three shots each time and, at the 10th end, led 11-9.

However, Dave and Val had found their line and length and controlled the mat for the next seven ends and, although Sue and Colin came back, claiming three shots at the 18th end, it was not enough and they conceded at that point for the Torquay pair to win 21-14.
