Competitions are progressing towards the final rounds, both internally and in the county. Angela Fish is still going strong in the Over-55 singles, having this week beaten Ann Dredge of Chardstock. She will now meet up with Linda Stone of Seaton in the section final.

In the Over 55 pairs, Jan Roberts and Jacky Howle played Sandra Wheeler and Val Newnam in the section semi-final at Sidmouth.

The teams went into the last end locked at 19-all with the Madeira pair holding four shots, and so were disappointed to go on to lose the game by one shot.

Six ladies from Madeira played for Section Three versus Bowls Devon, winning by six shots. Those taking part included Angela Fish, Jacky Howle, Christine Macaulay, Jenny Charles, Sue Lampey and Lin Hambly. Half of the Section Three team were unbadged and did very well indeed.

The men’s representative teams met up with Exonia twice this week, at home and away, in the Exeter District League, winning both games decisively.

C Reed, M Norman, I Thomson and I Goff clocked up a magnificent 45-7 win during the first game, which Madeira won 118-56. The second result was equally impressive with Madeira winning overall by plus 48 shots, the leading rink this time being D Tucker, D Clarbull, N Pond and A Southgate, who won their rink 29-9.

There have been three friendly fixtures this week. A touring team came from West Oxford, bringing six mixed rinks.

The home team did well to win five of those games and overall by 127 shots to 88. Peter Harvey led his team of Dee Williams, Mike Crelley and Chris Fox to the best shot difference of the day of plus 14. Broadclyst’s Stephen Cowling brought a strong four rink team to Madeira, but they found it difficult to get to terms with the speed of the green.

Madeira won overall by plus 63 shots with good wins on all rinks, the most decisive of which was skipped by Chris Fox playing with Mike Ball, Margaret Mahon and Barbara Walker – 33 shots to 15.
