The end of the 2012 season is fast approaching and there has been a flurry of friendlies over the past couple of weeks to make best use of the time left, write Jenny Smith.

Most of these have been mixed games although there have been three all-male fixtures.

Madeira Men played away against Exeter’s St Thomas over four rinks and despite having only won one of the four rinks were lucky to win. George Perrin ensured the victory by skipping his team of Len Worsfold, Dave Morrish and Greg Fish to a 34-17 win.

The men played a fixture of seven triples against touring team Bognor which they won comfortably 144-86 having coming out on top in six of the seven games. Mike Gorman’s team of Bill Barber and Mike Webb achieved Madeira’s best result on this occasion of plus 20 shots. Keynsham men also visited with five rinks, a game which Madeira men did well to win 108-81, winning four of the five rinks. John Bellamy and his team of Derek Dommett, M Crelley and Alan Porter achieved the best shot difference of plus 13.

There have been seven mixed friendlies. Madeira were heavily beaten at home by Crediton by 59 shots over six rinks, the best result being a draw achieved by Tony Ralph with Jill Perrin, Graham Clarkson and Marjorie Glanville. A mixed team went to Bridport with six rinks and narrowly lost 111-117. Francis Newton with Jill Honnor, Tony Wiseman and Ann Bellamy did best for Madeira with a 28-17 win.

There were unusually two mixed fixtures at home on one day. Exeter’s Pinces Garden brought four rinks and beat Madeira heavily by plus 43 shots. Splott Phoenix also brought four rinks and this time Madeira won the match by winning two of the four rinks and overall 90-75. The two winning Madeira rinks did equally well to win by plus 18 shots. Ladies vice captain Brenda Marks and her team of Alan Halpin, Jenny Charles and John Killoran won 33-15 and David Mears skipped his team of Dee Williams, J Spearing and Dee Norman to a 31- 13 win.

Finally Vic Doidge had a good day when he captained a team away at Tavistock, the town where he grew up and lived for many years, and played in the rink skipped by David Macaulay with Debbie Fox and Joyce Coggin which won by an impressive plus 30 shots and which secured a 105-93 victory for Madeira.
