It was mixed matches all the way this week with three visitors and two away games, writes Matt Marriott.

The first up was Culm Vale and in a game of five rinks Madeira came out on top by 53 shots at 113-60 winning on all rinks, the top scorers being skipped by Paul Wratton with Jean Bagnall,Dennis Fears and Nicki Fiddimore by 24 shots to seven.

This was followed by four rinks travelling to Chudleigh and resulted in an honourable draw of 107-107. Sandy Cox led her team of Stuart Grainger, Jill Honnor and Vic Doidge to a plus 13 win of 29-16 shots.

Madeira showed no mercy to visitors Wotton-under-Edge on their annual trip taking the day by 43 shots, 226-183 overall.

The smarty pants of the day were Catherine King with John Hopkins,Sue Lampley and Mike Marks taking top spot by 26 shots at 37-11. The visitors look forward to revenge next year.

Next up the City and Port of Bristol took a ride down the M5 to take us on, the result again going Madeira’s way by 85 shots, an overall score of 227-142.

Not a happy coach load going home! The top home rink was the one of David Macaulay, Lin Halpin, Mike Crelley and Shirley Smith who claimed a 31-7 success.

Next it was an away match to Tavistock. Despite winning on four of the six rinks played, Madeira lost overall by seven shots. The top rink being, winning their encounter by nine shots were, Derek Dommett, Terry Dowrick, Pauline Wratton and Jean Healey at 27-18. As usual this was a very good day out.

This led to the club finals weekend with the following winning results being, in the order they were played: The Ladies 3-Wood, Liz Healy; Men’s Axon Cup, Mick Powell; Ladies’ Handicap, Margaret Ratcliffe; Ladies’ championship, Sandra Mott; Men’s championship, Craig Ralph; Ashby Crane Open, Jim Bradford; Blackmore Cup, Dierdre Norman; Mixed Pair’s, Ken Roberts and Joan Stevens; Men’s Triples, Colin Shaw, Peter Hyatt and John Bellamy; Madeira Cup, Dierdre Norman; Hunter Cup, Mark Stephens; Mens 2-Wood, Ken Roberts; Ladies’ 2-Wood, Lyn Eveleigh; Men’s Pair’s, Robert Pemberton and Mick Powell; Ladies’ Pair’s, Jenny Smith and Josie Glaister.

Two days of good bowling and congratulations to all, and to all those who took part, without whom there would be no winners.
